PROGRAM
First Semester (30 ECTS)
  • This module explores how markets work and how firms develop pricing strategies from an economic perspective. This subject forms part of the Chartered Management Institute accreditation and part of the business subject benchmarks required in all U.K. business degrees. The module develops students’ understanding of the economic information found in news reports and economic and marketing reports and develops their ability and confidence to create independent analyses.

  • Employees may well hold the key to sustainable competitive advantage. This course helps students develop their knowledge of psychology and organizational theory to understand the factors which influence the way people behave within companies. They participate in information, exploration and application sessions, including practical management and leadership exercises; guest lectures from employers; and organizational visits. They also investigate the policies and practices used to manage these behaviors; learn how to choose appropriate leadership and management solutions; and develop skills to put this knowledge into practice.

  • Key to a successful career in business and the ability to make an impact is having an understanding of how different business departments and functions work and how they can impact each other, such insight can be termed as having business acumen. Parallel to business acumen is having the ability to communicate effectively, network with people and demonstrate appropriate professional behaviour, this can be termed as having business etiquette. This module will act as a foundation in developing your knowledge, skills and professional behaviour to allow you to make the desired impact when seeking your professional career. Over 12 weeks you will be introduced to key business subject areas, and through a simulation apply your learning to a business scenario (or series of scenarios). The application of the key subject areas will further develop your business knowledge and level of acumen. In addition to the business subject areas you will be introduced to concepts, techniques and skills development opportunities to enhance your communication and personal presentation skills, these activities will give you more confidence in business scenarios such as networking and interviews, and are designed to give you knowledge and awareness of appropriate business etiquette. As this is such an important area when meeting employers and in the place of work, the assessment strategy takes attendance into consideration as part of the grading.

Second Semester (30 ECTS)
  • Enterprising individuals are necessary within the economy as they create jobs, wealth and value. These individuals do this through applying an enterprising mindset, an individual and unique combination of enterprising behaviours, attributes and skills which can be used in a variety of contexts. For instance, this could be in starting and growing a business (i.e. in an entrepreneurial context) or applying to existing organisations, whether large companies, SME’s or not-for-profit organisations (i.e. in an intrapreneurial context). Being able to apply an enterprising mindset is highly desirable in today’s fast moving business environment where reacting to gaps in the market or competitor actions, dealing with uncertainty, being able to make decisions and take action will all extend your commercial awareness and business acumen. Therefore, this module is all about developing your enterprising mindset and then applying it in a real life situation. Building on and integrating the other first year business function modules, this module will overlay elements such as funnelling your creative energy, recognising the difference between a business idea and a business opportunity, deciding which approach is most beneficial, and then designing and implementing an appropriate plan of action. The aim of the module to help you understand the relevance and interaction of these elements within a business context, and to give you transferable skills you can apply in any organisational situation. Moreover, strong emphasis will be placed upon you to demonstrate these skills and to reflect upon your progress.

  • This module assumes no prior accounting knowledge. Students learn how to prepare accounts for small businesses and then apply that knowledge to larger organizations. They examine accounting statements to assess just how well a business is performing; identify and analyze business costs to aid decision making relating to the control and viability of projects; and identify and discuss sources of finance.

  • This introduction to the “fundamentals of marketing” module will provide you with a basic understanding of the current and emerging marketing principles and techniques within the business environment. It seeks to establish that sustainable market success within a highly competitive environment can only be achieved by developing products or services based upon an understanding of the external environment and customers’ needs and wants. During the module you will not only consider how to add value for customers and other stakeholders but also learn to assess the impact that marketing activities have on consumers’ lives. Your assessment is coursework-based, designed to enable you to demonstrate your ability to approach a business challenge as a marketer and business manager. The assessment methods used on this module will also help you to develop key skills desired by employers, (who will be involved in the setting and grading of your assessment) for example digital and visual communication and presentation skills, and business report writing. This module can also contribute to achieving the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) level 5 Diploma under the dual accreditation arrangement. Enhanced employability is just one widely recognised outcome of membership of professional membership.

Third Semester (30 ECTS)
  • The concept of employability has traditionally been viewed from a skills perspective; however, more recent thinking has suggested that it is also important for graduates to develop their own graduate identity. Students must develop the relevant skills and practices in order to then position themselves in the graduate labor market. This module aims to prepare students for their future careers, as well as more immediate work placements. Students examine the theory of graduate identity and employability, work on their leadership skills and, through a range of exercises and activities, develop their own identities. They also examine enterprise skills; vital for all modern-day graduates.

  • This two-semester module is based on traditional quantitative analysis techniques which are applied using Excel. Students familiarize themselves with relevant computer programs and develop key skills. They learn how to first analyze data, and then both interpret and communicate the results of their analyses; fundamental competencies required by the Chartered Management Institute. These then enable students to use data to inform business decisions or underpin business strategies, and can also be used for analysis activities in other modules.

  • This module equips students with the skills needed to evaluate the financial data used to produce company financial statements. Participants learn the importance of choosing the correct form of finance for a given business and gain an appreciation of both the value of corporate governance and of the responsibility of good managers to wider stakeholders in the business.Students examine common pitfalls in performance management and how to avoid them, and also develop relevant skills, such as the ability to understand, analyze and interpret financial, management and non-financial information in the context of modern business.

Fourth Semester (30 ECTS)
  • This module will enhance students’ understanding of the business macroeconomic environment by building on previously-developed concepts. Students examine the role of government in the economy, how economic policies can improve the performance of the national economy and how they affect businesses; whether they lead to further efficiency or more constraint. Topics covered include the competitiveness of the U.K. economy, the policies necessary to foster economic growth and the future of European economic integration. The analysis of these issues gives students the opportunity to develop critical practical skills related to selecting and interpreting data; analytical reasoning; and decision making that are required by professional accreditation bodies such as the Chartered Management Institute. This module forms part of the business subject benchmarks required for all UK business degrees.

  • Creativity and innovation are the basis of both new and existing businesses, and are key ingredients for on-going success which must be applied to various sectors; from raw materials and production to marketing and staff development. New employees, or those with different mindsets to others, can bring fresh insight to a business by asking the simple questions that employees forget to ask after a while. This module enables students to generate better ideas and gain personal competitive advantage by leveraging their own intellectual abilities. They research business innovation through unique and experiential case studies; explore and engage with some of the theories and principles of problem-solving and innovation; and discuss learning methods, theories and concepts that enable them to bring their own personal creativity styles to organizational activity, across all business disciplines. The module requires participants to be open-minded, with a willingness to explore and apply innovative thought processes in order to create a competitive advantage.

  • This module provides students with knowledge of the concepts of ethics, consumerism and social responsibility, and their relationship with organizations and corporations. Students consider the importance of these issues to both the organization and stakeholder, and apply the principles in the formation of strategies for sustainable competitive advantage. Students are equipped with a knowledge and understanding of the complex ethical issues involved in creating a marketing strategy for the 21st-century environment.

Fifth Semester (30 ECTS)
  • People have been described as an organization’s most valuable asset. The performance of individuals in companies is not just the concern of the HR Department, it is the concern of every employee who wants the company to succeed. This module explores how organizations use performance management, reward and development policies to maximize the performance of employees and the organizations they work within. From the development perspective this includes activities that mirror real-life situations to experience the difficulties faced by companies in developing the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed for sustainable competitive advantage.

  • The analysis of financial statements can tell us a great deal about the health of a company and its ability to deal with future challenges; a key skill in any business environment, whether profit is the primary motivation or not. This module concentrates on using the financial, economic and non-quantitative information available to assess the relative strengths of entities and their ability to react to the impact of outside forces on their performance.

  • Over recent decades there has been a fundamental shift in the world’s economy. Once self-contained national economies now partake in cross-border business activities and are thus much more inter-dependent on each other. This module unites elements of the global business environment with the strategy-making process and encourages students to both study and critically evaluate the global business environment. Participants graduate with an awareness of the relevance of theory; an appreciation of the differing cultural and political systems; and an understanding of how they impact upon the way international business is conducted.

Sixth Semester (30 ECTS)
  • This module encompasses many of the skills required of accountants in various differing international environments and considers areas of ethics, both business, professional and personal. It uncovers the importance of clear and transparent work practices, through a comprehensive analysis of corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. Students are challenged to make decisions based on their own research into contexts, ultimately providing practical advice and solutions to real-life scenarios.

  • International Entrepreneurship develops students’ appreciation of globalization trends and technological advances that enables them to apply theory to and then evaluate and enhance potential international entrepreneurial ventures. They explore entrepreneurial activity across boundaries, taking into account cultural and political differences; choice of markets; supply chain relations; and appropriate marketing implementation. They apply what they have learned to a local SME to produce an international market entry strategy and critically evaluate the process they have undertaken in a real-life situation.
